Privacy Policy — One Step

Effective date: 27 September 2026 (version 1.1 of the app)

One Step is a reminder and focus app for Android, developed by Seif Aldeen Mahmoud Tawfiq Albataineh, trading as Halfstep ("we", "us"). This policy explains what the app does with your information.

The short version

Your tasks never leave your phone. There is no account, no sign-up and no server to sync to. The only information that leaves your device is what Google collects to show ads, and in Europe and the UK we ask your permission before that happens.

Information stored on your device only

One Step stores the following on your phone, and nowhere else:

We cannot see any of it. It is not uploaded, backed up to us, or shared with anyone. It is stored in the app's private storage and is removed when you uninstall the app. You can also delete all of it at any time from Settings → Erase everything.

Voice capture (microphone)

One Step can turn what you say into the text of a task, instead of you typing it. This happens only when you tap Say it instead, and only after you allow the microphone.

Backup files

Settings → Back up to a file writes your tasks and steps to a file, and Restore from a file reads one back — for example when you move to a new phone. The file is created only when you ask for it, and it is saved wherever you choose on Android's own save screen (your phone, a USB stick, a cloud drive of your choice). We never receive it and cannot see it. Anyone you share the file with can read your tasks, so keep it somewhere private.

Information collected for advertising

One Step is free and supported by ads served by Google AdMob. To show those ads, the Google Mobile Ads SDK collects and shares the following:

DataPurpose
IP address, and the approximate location estimated from itAdvertising, analytics, fraud prevention
User product interactionsAdvertising, analytics, fraud prevention
Diagnostic informationAdvertising, analytics, fraud prevention
Device and account identifiers, including the Android advertising IDAdvertising, analytics, fraud prevention

This information is collected by Google and shared with Google as an independent controller. All of it is encrypted in transit using TLS.

Google uses the IP address to estimate an approximate, city-level location so that ads are relevant to your country and region. One Step never requests the Android location permission, never uses GPS, and does not receive or store your location itself.

We do not receive this data ourselves. We only see anonymous, aggregated totals in the AdMob dashboard, such as how many ads were shown.

Consent in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland

If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, the app asks for your consent before requesting any ad, using Google's User Messaging Platform. You can choose to allow personalised ads, or to refuse.

You can change your answer at any time from Settings → Ad privacy choices, which reopens the same form. That option is shown only in regions where it applies.

Our legal basis for advertising data is your consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)). Where you have not consented, ads may still be shown but are not personalised.

Your rights under GDPR

If you are in the EEA or the UK, you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, and the right to data portability. You also have the right to withdraw consent at any time, and to complain to your local data protection authority.

Because the data described above is collected and held by Google rather than by us, requests about advertising data are best directed to Google using the links above. For anything else, contact us at seif.appslab@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days.

The tasks and settings you create are stored only on your own device, so you can exercise every one of these rights directly and immediately, without asking us, by editing or deleting them in the app.

United States privacy rights

If you live in a US state with a consumer privacy law, such as California, you have the right to know what personal information is collected, to have it deleted, and to opt out of its sale or sharing for targeted advertising.

You can limit ad personalisation at any time from your Android settings under Settings → Google → Ads, where you can also reset or delete your advertising ID. Where required, the app shows a privacy options form that lets you make this choice directly.

Children

One Step is not directed to children and is not intended for anyone under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has used the app, contact us and we will act on it.

How to delete your data

Google Play requires this to be stated plainly, so here are the exact steps.

To delete everything One Step has stored about you:

  1. Open One Step on your phone
  2. Tap You in the bottom bar
  3. Scroll to YOUR DATA
  4. Tap Erase everything
  5. Confirm by tapping Erase

This permanently deletes every task, every step, every completion record and your display name. It happens immediately, on your device, and it cannot be undone. Uninstalling the app removes the same data.

What this does not cover: the advertising data described above is held by Google, not by us. To delete or reset it, use your Android settings under Settings → Google → Ads, where you can reset or delete your advertising ID at any time.

There is no account to delete, because the app never creates one, and there is no copy of your tasks on any server for us to remove.

If you have any question about deleting your data, email seif.appslab@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days.

Data retention and deletion

There is no account to delete, because the app never creates one.

Security

Data on your device is protected by Android's app sandbox and by whatever lock you have set on your phone. Data sent to Google for advertising is encrypted in transit with TLS. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we do not transmit or store your task data at all.

Permissions the app uses

Notifications we send

Besides the reminders you set, One Step can send one check-in after three days without the app being opened, naming one small step you could take. It is created and scheduled on your phone; nothing is sent from a server. Turn it off under Settings → Check in if I am away.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Significant changes affecting how your data is used will also be announced in the app.
